Pesto and Potholes Susan M Baganz 9781511928472 Books Reviews

Pesto & Potholes was the first Christian romance I’ve read. I was somewhat skeptical when I read that ninjas were incorporated in the novel. However, much to my delight, they were included as a compassionate and humorous addition to the story. The characters were well developed and some very likable, others definitely NOT likable. I had a clear picture in my mind of each of them and found myself rooting for Renata and Tony and even thinking about them when I wasn’t reading the book. I thought the healing from the abuse and emotional trauma was handled in a realistic fashion. The lovely lacing of Faith throughout the story made it a worthwhile and inspirational read. The author, Susan Baganz, wrote a compelling, faith-filled story as her debut novel. I’ll be looking forward to her next.
Pesto and Potholes is a underdog story to complete triumph. The main character suffers a lot in the first ten pages, and the rest of the book follows her through recovering her life, finding a man who truly seeks after God in his heart. I loved the extra character details she wove into the story, like how the family loves a certain football team, or how her upstairs neighbor needs help fighting "Ninjas." LOL It's a great wholesome romance that gives you that happily-ever-after at the end and a burst of hope that God mends all wounds.
Pesto and Potholes was well-written and captivating!. The book broached several issues domestic violence; dysfunctional families; "other gods"; sanctity of life; dealing with evil, anger, and circumstances; need for discernment, building trust; and the support that can be provided by the Church (the body of Christ). We all deal with ups and downs (pesto and potholes) in our lives and in own walk with Christ. Reading the book was a growing experience for me.
If you enjoy Christian romance, you will love Pesto and Potholes.
Love is elusive for Renata. It has betrayed her on so many levels, a dysfunctional family, an abusive marriage, a miscarriage. And if all of that isn't enough to bear, her pastor fails her by telling her to submit to a husband who beats her.
Renata finally works up the courage to leave, but it's no wonder she finds it difficult to trust again.
The story of how she overcomes her past and her fears is inspiring. Based on this, you might think the book will be too dark to appeal to you. But it will make you smile and even laugh as it unfolds and as you are introduced to some of the lovable and even zany characters.
And in the end, Renata finally finds the love she deserves.
What an excellent debut! This novel is loaded with lots of tasty ingredients. Delicious characters, both serious and whimsical (I'm thinking Edith here). The details of the setting are marvelous and of great interest to me, because I live near where the book is set. The realistic twists and turns of the couple's romance grab you and don't let you go. The roadblocks (potholes) on the path to love are real ones -- unlike so many books where one little conversation between lovers would set all right -- NO, this story has genuineness on every page, with some very fascinating and realistic problems keeping the hero and heroine apart. I was very satisfied and savored it down to the last page. Am very impressed with this worthwhile read. Will definitely watch for more by Susan Baganz.
Susan M. Baganz has penned a book in which drama, romance, spiritual insight, and comedy abound. This book not only shined a light on domestic violence, it also shined a light on the fact that God can see us through any tragic circumstance. I appreciated how the author could build tension and then skillfully use humor to temper it. This story was extremely well written, and the characters came alive. I found myself pulling for Renata and Tony--I wanted them to have their happy ending. I also found myself drawn to the author's spiritual discussions about God. I applaud a book that illuminates spiritual truths, and this author's insight into "potholes" is something I'm going to remember for a long time.
Pesto and Potholes is a story that brings hope to women of abuse. This is not your cozy Christian Romance. Tony and Renatta both need emotional healing in order to reach their happy ever after. Both are part of a large church, which I find interesting. Even members of mega-churches with all its resources can still be in pain. Wounds only Jesus can truly heal. At times the slowness of their relationship frustrated me. However, the struggle is more realistic than an easy road from awfulness to joy? I found this story fresh and compelling, although at times the dialog seemed contrived and one scene seemed a bit unbelievable. Overall, the plot twists in the road caught me by surprised and kept me turning pages. Lots of Scripture, information regarding the psychology of abuse, and the truth about the healing process are at the core of the fictitious tale. Susan Baganza wraps a truth Christians need to hear in a delightful package of romance and healing.
